More Geography Lessons

Belgium has three official languages. And just to keep it confusing for visiting Texans, none of the languages are Belgian.  They speak French in the south, Dutch in the north and German in the east.  I think that I heard French spoken mostly as we walked around Brussels.

Belgium is not too big.  I tried to compare it to the size of Texas but it just does not compare.  After some fancy math, I figured that the entire country of Belgium is only thirteen times the size of Collin County.  Belgium is also on the coast of Europe and just across the water from the UK.  Less than thirty minutes after we flew out of Brussels we were over England.

A pretty weird thing that we noticed in Brussels is that everywhere we went, there was a picture of a short guy named Manneken Pis.  You can see photo for yourself, but he is the symbol of Brussels and is the most popular souvenir.  You can get one of these made from chocolate, ceramic, glass and there were about a million refrigerator magnets.

Every city has to have a symbol or mascot, I would look for another one.
