Bombing in Bangkok

You probably saw on the news this week that there was a bombing in a shrine in Bangkok, Thailand.  Videos on CNN seemed familiar so I looked at our Stonetrips web site and I looked up where the bombing was this week.

The Thailand bombing this week was at the Erawan Shrine at the Ratchaprasong intersection of Bangkok.

The shrine that was bombed was right next door to the hotel I stayed at four years ago in Bangkok. While we were there, there was rioting in front of our hotel to protest the 1 year anniversary of a large killing of people at the same corner.

In May of 2011, Paul, Ron, Larry and I stayed at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok Hotel next door to this shrine.  While we stayed there, there was rioting between the "Red Shirts" and the "Yellow Shirts" on the anniversary of a killing of many people by the police at that intersection 1 year before.

I found this USG travel warning on my website  (http://stonetrips.com/thailand-singapore-2011-1.html

Thailand: ‘Red Shirts' to rally in central Bangkok on 19 May to mark anniversary of government crackdown
Supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD, also known as the ‘Red Shirts') are planning to rally on 19 May at Ratchaprasong intersection in the centre of the capital Bangkok. The demonstration has been organised to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the military's forcible dispersal of UDD protesters from the intersection; at least 89 people were killed and 2,000 others injured in the unrest.
